Ally - Providing Accessible Content
DescriptionAccess to content in Cougar Courses in a format that best meets the needs and preferences of diverse learners is a challenge for many students. PDF, Word, and PowerPoint files often don’t work on mobile devices or with note-taking apps. Editing these materials into a format that is accessible for all students can be quite challenging and time consuming for instructors.
In an effort to be more inclusive, and follow Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles, IITS found a tool to help in this process. Ally guides instructors on how to edit files into more accessible formats while providing students choices for different formats (HTML, audio, epub). We are rolling the tool out to campus in phases with a targeted summer launch, a soft launch in Fall 2018 and a full launch in Spring 2019.

07/07/2019: An online self-paced training is being developed for Fall 2019 and workshops for TechBites.
04/01/2019: Project extended so that ATS can create an online course for faculty to use to learn more about using Ally.
01/28/2019: Available in all courses. Posted on Cougar Courses and included in the IITS faculty newsletter. Workshop scheduled for 2/7/19
12/14/2018: The Faculty Center newsletter included information about phase three of the Ally implementation as of Dec 2018.
09/28/2018: We are rolling the tool out to campus in phases, on track for the full launch in Spring 2019.
08/22/2018: Phase II Rollout - Started. 184 Faculty were involved in this phase. Focused on Courses that receive services from DSS and several volunteers.
06/04/2018: Phase I Rollout - Started. 19 Faculty were involved in this phase. Focused on Courses that receive services from DSS.
